Indian couple that met on Instagram to host wedding reception in Metaverse presided over by the avatar of the bride’s late father

A few months ago, Mark Zuckerberg brought metaverse into the forefront of buzzy tech by rebranding Facebook to Meta and expounding his vision for Horizon Home, an early vision for a home base in the metaverse. Even before dust settled on the Connect 2021 announcement, a middle aged American couple Dave and Traci Gagnon jumped the bandwagon by planning the "world’s first" wedding in the metaverse.

Perhaps taking a leaf out of Gagnon’s playbook, an Indian couple from the state of Tamil Nadu is scheduled to hold their wedding reception in the metaverse, inviting guests to login in virtually from around the world. Dinesh Kshatriyan and Janaganandhini Ramaswamy plan to host their reception in the virtual dining room of Hogwarts castle.

In a tweet announcing this move, Dinesh said

The couple first met through Instagram and is set to tie the knot on February 6 in in Tamil Nadu’s Sivalingapuram village followed by the virtual-metaverse reception. The bride, Janaganandhini is a software developer while Dinesh works as a project associate at the prestigious IIT Madras.

The couple’s virtual avatars will meet with the guests in the metaverse venue, with the event being presided over by the avatar of the bride’s late father. The invited guests can choose their avatar’s attire ranging from traditional Indian to Western costumes. The guests can also opt to gift the couple via Googles’ GPay or Crypto.

A New York Times' article aptly summed up the feelings around weddings and receptions in the Metaverse "How the immersive virtual world known as the metaverse, which few of us understand, will change the traditional wedding is, at the moment, anyone’s guess. But the possibilities of having an event unfettered by the bounds of reality are interesting enough to consider."

Dinesh came up with the idea of hosting the wedding reception in the metaverse and quickly got Janaganandhini’s buy-in. The video teaser posted on Kshatriyan's tweet entices visitors that "grins will only get wider and our giggles bigger."

Marriages made in heaven, and giggles in the Metaverse. What more can one ask for?!
