Naturalization Fraud - Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-origin taxi driver to be stripped of his US Citizenship over Rape
US authorities are pursuing the revocation of citizenship from Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-origin taxi driver, after discovering he concealed a violent rape and kidnapping conviction during his naturalization application.
In 2011, Singh picked up a young female passenger in his Brooklyn taxi late at night; she fell asleep in the backseat during the ride. He diverted to a secluded side street, where she awoke to him on top of her with a knife to her throat, threatening her life if she resisted. Singh bound, gagged, blindfolded, and raped her before releasing her.
A Brooklyn jury convicted Singh on May 2, 2014, of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping as a sexually motivated felony, following a trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court under Judge Miriam Cyrulnik. On May 12, 2014, he received a 20-year prison sentence from Kings County District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson, who highlighted Singh's betrayal of his duty to safely transport the victim.
Singh naturalized as a US citizen on October 19, 2011—months after the 2011 assault—by falsely denying any criminal history or arrests on his application, despite the pending charges. This misrepresentation forms the basis for denaturalization, as US law requires full disclosure of crimes during the process.
Denaturalization Proceedings
The US Department of Justice filed to strip Singh's citizenship in early February 2026 in New York federal court, where a judge must rule if the government proves fraud materially affected his eligibility. Denaturalization applies only to naturalized citizens, not those born in the US, and involves rigorous federal court standards.
This case aligns with the Trump administration's directive to USCIS offices to refer 100-200 denaturalization cases monthly to the DOJ in fiscal year 2026, a sharp rise from about 120 nationwide cases between 2017 and 2025. US Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized protecting citizenship's "sacred privilege," while Eastern District US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. called out Singh's deceit post-crime.
